Maintenance of SF6 Gas

Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) gas is an arc quenching and cooling medium used in medium and high voltage electrical equipment as an electrical insulator. Under the Kyoto Protocol, SF6 has been classified as a greenhouse gas and restrictions are in place to limit the amount allowed to be released into the atmosphere.

Both manufacturers and the users of their equipment are responsible for the reduction in SF6 gas emissions. Organisations such as the International Electrochemical Commission (IEC) and the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) provide guidance and regulatory information with regards to the handling of such a gas when it comes to maintenance.

When partial arcing or a failure occurs within electrical equipment, this can cause the creation of decomposition products such as sulphur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride. Analysis of SF6 gas is recommended as part of a regular condition maintenance schedule, this ensures that equipment and personnel are properly protected. Early identification of elevated decomposition products will help to eliminate power outages and failures, alongside unnecessary inspections.

In order to ensure that no emissions occur throughout the testing process, Cambridge Sensotec designed the Rapidox SF6 6100 Pump Back gas analyser. The instrument draws a sample of SF6 gas from the electrical equipment and analyses it in accordance with current IEC and CIGRE test configurations. It then pumps it back either automatically or manually, into the electrical equipment at pressure. Alternatively, the analyser can store the gas internally for proper disposal at a later time.

Cambridge Sensotec Launch New range of Rapidox SF6 Gas Analysers at EP China 2014

Cambridge Sensotec announced the launch of their new Rapidox SF6 6100 Pump Back gas analyser at the EP China Exhibition in Beijing this month. The analyser is designed for monitoring SF6 gas within medium and high voltage gas insulated electrical equipment. EP China is an international event organised by the China Electricity Council, showcasing electrical power automation equipment and technology to an international audience. The Rapidox SF6 6100 Pump Back gas analyser headlined the revamped range of Rapidox SF6 gas analysers on the Cambridge Sensotec stand, attracting many international visitors.

Rapidox SF6 6100 Pump Back Gas Analyser

A fully automatic SF6 gas analyser designed to store the gas samples or pump them back into the electrical equipment at high pressure, with no waste or emissions. Versatile and transportable, the battery powered instrument is housed within a heavy-duty Peli case, with wheels and a handle. It is the lightest instrument of its kind on the market, weighing only 21kg. Pre-programmed with ISO and CIGRE compliant test configurations, the portable analyser also includes an integrated thermal printer for printed test results on-site.

Portable SF6 gas analysis field instrument, with over 8 hours of battery life. SF6 Gas and its Uses Within Electrical Applications

Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) is a man-made gas comprising of one sulphur and six fluoride atoms. SF6 is extremely chemically stable, non-flammable and highly electronegative, with an excellent dielectric property of approximately 2.5 times more than air. Therefore it is commonly used in electrical switchgear, transformers and substations as an electrical insulation, arc quenching and cooling medium.

Electrical arcs are a discharge of light and heat and can be caused within electrical power systems such as switchgear when conductive channels facilitate their formation. The high electronegativity and heat transferring properties of SF6 means that it is able to absorb the electron energy and lower the arc temperature through the capture of free electrons. The combination of the SF6 gas and free electrons results in big, heavy ions with low rates of mobility, which effectively prevents electron avalanches and flashovers.

While under the influence of electrical discharges SF6 partially decomposes, separating into its atomic components. During this time oxygen, moisture and decomposition products such as sulphur dioxide may be created. Unlike other insulating mediums, SF6 gas has the unique ability to ‘self-heal’ with the atoms recombining after the discharge, this is one of the reasons for its widespread use within the electrical industry.

Regular analysis of SF6 gas is essential as part of a maintenance schedule. In order to protect personnel and equipment, it is advised that periodic servicing is carried out throughout the lifetime of the equipment. Identification of elevated decomposition levels will ensure unnecessary inspections, outages and failures in addition to reducing maintenance expenditure and ensuring the effectiveness of the SF6 gas.

The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement between nations that came into force in 2005. It commits its parties by mandating country-by-country reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Due to the chemical stability of SF6 gas it has the potential to remain in the atmosphere for thousands of years. Under the Kyoto Protocol, SF6 gas has been identified as a greenhouse gas with a limitation as to the amount that can be released into the atmosphere.

Stricter legislation has seen changes to the requirements of the electrical power industry in relation to the handling of SF6 gas. As a result, Cambridge Sensotec has developed the new Rapidox SF6 6100 gas analyser featuring a pump back gas return function. The analyser is able to extract the SF6 gas from equipment such as Gas Insulated Substations (GIS) and simultaneously analyse all measured gases. It will then pump it back at the same pressure as used within the electrical equipment by using a powerful 10 bar compressor. A vacuum purge cycle and gas storage system ensures that no air is allowed to contaminate the gas sample and that no SF6 gas is allowed to escape during the testing period.

The Rapidox uses high precision infrared (IR) sensor technology for the analysis of SF6 gas. Infrared sensor technology is based on the principle that some gases absorb IR radiation at specific wavelengths. It is advantageous in that it supplies the user with a rapid response, is immune to poisoning and contamination and has the ability to operate in the absence of oxygen.

Decomposition products sulphur dioxide (SO2) and moisture (H2O) may also be measured by the Rapidox SF6 6100 gas analyser, using electrochemical and advanced ceramic sensor technology respectively. Additional sensors for gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and hydrogen fluoride (HF) are also available.
Cambridge Sensotec has also been carrying out field tests, which have highlighted the requirement for quick and easy to use instruments for onsite SF6 gas maintenance procedures. Therefore, the Rapidox SF6 6100 pump back gas analyser has been developed with an inbuilt microprocessor operated by a 7” colour touchscreen, with the ability to store 12 months of continuous data. Pre-loaded IEC and CIGRE tests are available, alongside the ability to customise test parameters. Housed within a robust IP66 Peli case, the Rapidox is lightweight and features an 8-hour lithium ion battery in addition to an in-built printer, making it a truly portable field instrument.

Cambridge Sensotec is Developing an All New SF6 Gas Analyser with Pump Back Facility

In response to the requirements of the electricity generation and distribution industries, Cambridge Sensotec is nearing completion of a new and exciting portable SF6 gas analyser to include a gas return function.

As GIS equipment contains pressurised SF6 gas, Cambridge Sensotec’s new analyser will allow the user to return the sample to pressurised switchgear. SF6 gas samples can be extracted from the GIS equipment into the analyser, measured and pumped back. This eliminates the need to refill the GIS and prevents the release of any SF6 gas into the atmosphere (in accordance with Kyoto greenhouse gas handling legislation).

As part of the product’s development, Cambridge Sensotec is conducting extensive on-site trials to gain technical and practical knowledge. The information gathered has then been fed into the product development process, meaning the completed unit will be designed to meet all of the challenges faced by the user. The site visits included a tour of a typical substation facility and demonstrations by the site staff of the procedures of testing GIS equipment. Cambridge Sensotec’s prototype SF6 gas analyser was used in conjunction with both new and old GIS equipment to assess the applications requirements in full.

In addition to the analyser’s gas pump back facility, the portable analyser will include high precision gas sensors for measuring SF6, SO2 and H2O, with the option of adding sensors for measuring HF and O2 within the SF6 gas. The analyser will also feature a 7” touch screen display, pre-loaded IEC and CIGRE tests (custom tests can also be set), an 8 hour lithium ion battery, robust IP66 Peli-case, 12 months continuous data storage and optional DILO DN8 and DN20 fittings.

The launch date of the new SF6 gas analyser is planned for Autumn 2014.

Cambridge Sensotec Launches Battery Powered Rapidox SF6 Gas Analyser

The Rapidox SF6 IR portable gas analyser is the latest high precision instrument designed for controlling and monitoring the quality of SF6 in Gas Insulated Substations and circuit breakers. The gas analyser will measure SF6 over the full range in a balance gas. Fitted with an internal battery pack, the Rapidox provides up to eight hours use on a single charge. This allows the user to carry out a full day’s maintenance before returning to base to charge. The unit can be used while charging allowing for continuous operation if necessary. The gas analyser measures SF6 (0-100%) using an infra-red SF6 detector. This top of the range infra-red card offers exceptional accuracy and stability when measuring the purity of SF6 over the full range.

All SF6 readings can be data logged and just a few minutes are required to get a stable reading, allowing the user to quickly take measurements before moving to the next testing site. Data can also be logged internally at a rate set by the user for later downloading to a PC. Internally logged data is retained even when powered off. The Rapidox has a gas output nozzle allowing all sampled gas to be recovered and recycled, ensuring that no SF6 gas is released into the atmosphere (in accordance with the Kyoto agreement). Available as a bench style instrument or as a full kit in a transport suitcase, with a range of DILO compatible sampling hoses, couplings and a printer. Cambridge Sensotec Launches Second Generation of Rapidox Gas Recovery Bag

Cambridge Sensotec have revised and greatly improved their Rapidox Gas Recovery Bag to meet the harsh demands of the industrial gas recovery sector. Compared to other extremely expensive and cumbersome gas recovery systems, Cambridge Sensotec can offer a simple, cost effective, lightweight and portable alternative to this.

Able to hold up to 80 litres of SF6 gas at standard pressure, allowing for many hours of testing before the bag needs to be emptied. Once the user has finished or the bag has become full, it can be returned to a recycling facility. The Rapidox Gas Recovery Bag can be useful for field engineers, transporting gas samples, temporary storage and many other applications. The bag is constructed from extremely tough heavy-duty DP472 PU (712028) coated polyamide material and has a safety blow off valve incorporated. A clear pocket on the side for documents and a strong rope-reinforced convenient carry handle is also included.

The Rapidox Gas Recovery Bag is supplied with a DILO compatible self-sealing return valve. This allows the user to add an optional DILO valve with a male Rectus fitting for the recovery of SF6 sample gas as well as many other gases. An optional gas valve fitting can allow the stored gas to be decanted into a permanent storage bottle. The Rapidox Gas Recovery Bag can also work in conjunction with any other gas analysers fitted with the correct valve.

Cambridge Sensotec Introduce First SF6 Single Gas Analyser Using IR Technology

In response to increasing customer demand for a more cost-effective product, we are proud to announce the Rapidox 3100C SF6 single gas analyser. This mains powered analyser will measure SF6 gas over the full range (0-100%) using an infra-red SF6 sensor, which offers exceptional accuracy and stability when measuring purity.
Users can monitor the SF6 gas, with all analysis data-logged internally at a rate set by the user. This data is then available for download to a PC for analysis. It takes only a few minutes to achieve a stable reading, and as the internally logged data is retained when the analyser is switched off, the recorded data does not need to be downloaded immediately.

The Rapidox 3100C IR SF6 single gas analyser is fitted with a gas output nozzle that allows all sampled gas to be removed and recycled in accordance with the Kyoto treaty. It can be supplied as a bench style instrument or as a portable kit housed in a hard-wearing case, which includes DILO compatible sampling hoses, couplings and a printer. An SF6 Gas Recovery Bag is also available at a low cost, to ensure that no gas is lost or leaked into the atmosphere.
